The Present Simple

Is one of the present forms in English. It is used in reference to situations that occur regularly or permanent situations. Therefore, we usually use it accompanied by adverbs of frequency (usually, often, never etc.) or expressions like every day, week, Monday etc. or on Mondays. In the next lesson we will insist on these expressions.

Gift forms:

Affirmative

The infinitive of the verb + s for the 3rd person singular.

I / you /we /they work
He / she /it works

Interrogative form

Auxiliary DO / DOES + subject + verb (without 3rd person singular -s mark)

Do I/you/we/they work?
Does he/she/it work?

negative form
Subject + Auxiliary DO NOT / DOES NOT + verb

Are you /we/they Spanish?
Is he/she/it from Barcelona?

3rd person singular spelling rules

Most verbs add -s to the form of the infinitive: sit - sits; sleep - sleeps

Exceptions:

When the infinitive ends in consonant + y, one has to change the y for an i and add-is: try-tries; cry - cries; fly - flies
But when the verb ends in vowel + y, the basic rule (infinitive + s) is respected: enjoy - enjoys; stay - stays

The infinitive verbs ending in -s, -z, -ch, -sh, -x add the ending -es:
miss - misses; buzz - buzzes; watch - watches; wash - washes; mix - mixes

There are three irregular verbs: have - has / do - does / go - goes.
